After 14 years, the clock finally ran out on Andy Reid. But for anyone looking at the signs, his firing wasn't unexpected. Owner Jeff Lurie said another 8-8 season like 2011 would be "unacceptable." D-coordinator Juan Castillo was fired in October, defensive end Jason Babin was cut in November and D-line coach Jim Washburn was out in December. We weren't even halfway through November before the Jon Gruden-to-Philly rumor mill started heating up while Reid ducked the "are you going to quit?" questions throughout an eight-game losing streak. Sure, the Iggles' 4-12 finish was only Reid's third losing season, but the end results were hideous: 29th in offense, 29th in defense, a negative-164 point differential (franchise-worst since 1998), 15 turnovers and 28 sacks in 10 games for Michael Vick and not a single Eagle named to the Pro Bowl. So maybe the front office should have waited another year before announcing in January its first ticket price hike since 2009?
Nonetheless, the front office has thrown fans a few bones this offseason. A $125 million revitalization project (all privately funded) to add 1,600 seats, new HD video boards and Wi-Fi installation is under way, and the hijacking of Chip Kelly from the NCAA and the Browns is complete. Big Balls Chip has adapted early -- moving training camp back to Philly (first time in 70 years), experimenting with four-tight end sets and getting hip to the lingo, declaring that a Super Bowl "would be like a 1,000 Wing Bowls." No bones about it.
