Five expiring contracts that could make for trade deadline headlines:
Ryan Miller, Buffalo. GM Darcy Regier has barely hidden the fact that he's taken calls on the 2010 Olympic MVP. As the deadline nears, those calls will ramp up, and it's almost a guarantee Miller moves unless the retooling Sabres surprise this season and challenge for a playoff spot.
Thomas Vanek, Buffalo. See above in terms of where Regier is headed with the Sabres. Vanek would be quite the goal-scoring addition for any contender looking for an offensive spark.
Paul Stastny, Colorado. After years of trade rumors, you figure it might finally happen given his expiring contract and the incredible depth the Avs have at center, especially if Colorado can fetch help on defense with a Stastny trade.
Mike Cammalleri, Calgary. The Flames are rebuilding with capital letters, and the veteran Cammalleri will fetch more assets closer to the deadline. Pretty much a guarantee he moves.
Ales Hemsky, Edmonton. He's another player that for years has been mentioned in trade rumors. With his deal expiring, even if the Oilers are sitting in a playoff spot they might entertain offers for the Czech winger if one can improve their depth on defense.
