Roundball chatter

Each week I'll write about the sport I love, college basketball:

P.J. Hairston will be practicing for North Carolina, but he has not been reinstated to play in games. Hairston had his share of off-court issues and has to regain playing status. I expect him to miss a few games this season before he is allowed back.

• UCLA coach Steve Alford got some good news with the addition of 6-foot-5 diaper dandy guard Isaac Hamilton from Los Angeles. A McDonald's All American from out of St. John Bosco High School, he averaged 23.5 points per game, 7.6 rebounds per game and 5 assists per game as a senior.

• Clemson suffered a blow when diaper dandy Patrick Rooks was lost for the season with a hip injury. The 6-foot-3 guard played with the Tigers on an exhibition trip to Italy before suffering the injury during workouts.

• Injuries are taking an early toll with practice underway. Kentucky's Willie Cauley-Stein suffered a hand injury which will sideline him for a couple of weeks of practice. Mitch McGary of Michigan has been hampered by back spasms.

• Deciding to transfer in late September can be tough on a coach. Purdue's Matt Painter found that out when 6-foot-8 sophomore forward Donnie Hale, who started eight games last season, decided to go elsewhere.

• Give Mississippi credit for bolstering its nonconference schedule. Andy Kennedy's team has Kansas State, Oregon, Georgia Tech and either St. John's or Penn State on the agenda before SEC play.

• If you are looking for a diaper dandy that may surprise this season, look at Marcus Foster of Kansas State. Bruce Weber was happy to get him from out of Texas and he likes his potential.
