Dan Uggla not on NLDS roster

The Atlanta Braves did not include three-time All-Star Dan Uggla on their 25-man roster for the National League Division Series.

The Braves released their NLDS roster Wednesday, one day before they open at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Despite hitting 22 home runs this season, Uggla batted just .179 -- the worst average among major league qualifiers. The second baseman has two years remaining on a five-year, $62 million contract with the Braves.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported earlier that Braves officials were struggling with the decision regarding whether to include Uggla on the roster.

Atlanta's roster included slumping center fielder B.J. Upton, who batted just .184 this season, and veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia, who posted a 1.65 ERA in September.

Paul Maholm, who made 26 starts this season, was not on the roster. The left-hander went 10-11 with a 4.41 ERA and struggled with wrist and elbow injuries down the stretch.

Uggla struggled with vision problems and was placed on the disabled list Aug. 13 so that he could have laser eye surgery.

The surgery didn't appear to help. Uggla hit only .122 in 49 at-bats in September and began losing playing time to Elliot Johnson, who had five RBIs in the regular-season finale and is expected to open the division series as the starter at second base.

The Braves' roster also included infielder Paul Janish, who can play second base.
