UConn's Kentan Facey OK'd to play

Connecticut Huskies freshman big man Kentan Facey has been cleared to play this season.

The 6-foot-9 Facey's status was in doubt due to his academic background while in his native Jamaica. Facey was a top-100 player and his presence is much-needed on a Huskies team that lacks quality frontcourt players.

"I am so pleased and excited that everything has worked out for this outstanding young man," UConn coach Kevin Ollie said Friday. "It's great to see him go through this situation and persevere. He just kept working very hard and believed in our university."

Facey took to Twitter after hearing the news.

Uconn compliance staff is dead serious!!!! Thank you lord!!!! @NCAA thank y'all too

Veteran Tyler Olander was recently reinstated to the team after being suspended, but he's more of a role player. The 6-foot-10 Olander has averaged 3.2 points and 3.0 rebounds in his three years in Storrs.

Facey has potential, and UConn beat out several high-major programs to land the long and athletic big man. However, Facey -- who has only been playing basketball for a few years -- is raw on the offensive end and also needs to put on weight.

Facey played last season at Long Island Lutheran in New York and should help in terms of rebounding and shot-blocking, two areas in which the Huskies were lacking a year ago.
