Roundball chatter

Each week I'll write about the sport I love, college basketball:

• What is the basis for a waiver for the Georgetown Hoyas' big man Josh Smith? He left UCLA and will be eligible right away. I have no problem with it, but once again I am confused by the NCAA's lack of consistency. They denied several players immediate eligibility but sided with others and let them play right away.

• Just imagine what former Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl was thinking with sanctions set down on Miami. He got a punishment that was a lot worse than five games. The NCAA rulings are totally inconsistent. Meanwhile, Frank Haith has the best support one can get as a coach. Missouri's chancellor and athletic director are in his corner.

• Speaking of the Tigers, keep an eye on a couple of former transfers in the backcourt this season. Jabari Brown (ex-Oregon) and Earnest Ross (ex-Auburn) deserve the spotlight this season.

P.J. Hairston took part in North Carolina's version of Lane Night/Midnight Madness. Let's hope Hairston has learned from his past mistakes and moves on in a positive manner. *It is amazing how inconsistent the NCAA is in their rulings on granting waivers to allow immediate eligibility. Some players with a legit case were denied. It doesn't always make sense.

• Oregon already had an outstanding backcourt. Now that Houston transfer Joseph Young can play for the Ducks right away, watch out.

• St. John's shot-blocker extraordinaire Chris Obekpa was suspended for two exhibition games and the school's Midnight Madness program for violating school rules. Hopefully he will learn and be ready for the regular season.
