Peyton Manning misses practice

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Peyton Manning took a rare day off Wednesday to get treatment on his ailing right ankle.

But both Manning and Broncos interim head coach Jack Del Rio said the star quarterback will be in the lineup Sunday when Denver hosts the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs.

Asked about Manning's status for Sunday's game after practice, Del Rio said, "No doubt in my mind there. ... He'll be ready to go."

Manning also said he was confident he would be in the lineup against the rival Chiefs.

Manning, who has missed just one previous practice this season, took part in the Broncos' walk-through Wednesday but did not participate in the team's full workout, which was Denver's only padded practice of the week.

Del Rio said earlier this week that Manning may take "an occasional day off here and there" during the course of the season.

"We certainly talked about it Monday about what the plan was," Manning said. "I don't [know] if it's an age bracket thing or what. I've made a lot of adjustments in these past two years, you know, at this point in time in my career, and this is just another one of them. I think it makes [sense] and I'll be better for it."

Backup quarterback Brock Osweiler took the snaps with the starters Wednesday. Manning, unless he has some sort of setback Thursday, is expected to practice at least on a limited basis.

Peyton Manning was "pretty sore" after taking several hits against the Chargers, including this one low on his body near the end of the Broncos' victory.

"I always like to be out there, be out there with your teammates," Manning said. "You certainly want to be out there, in my opinion, to keep your timing with your receivers."

Hit low by Chargers defensive end Corey Liuget in the closing minutes of Sunday's 28-20 victory, Manning had an MRI on Monday morning. The exam showed no new damage to a high ankle sprain he suffered Oct. 13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Manning also had his right ankle twisted awkwardly by Chargers outside linebacker Larry English earlier in Sunday's game.

"I'm pretty sore," Manning said after the game. "They got me twice in that lower area. I felt better coming into the game after the bye week, but I'm pretty sore."

Manning was hit by Liuget just after completing a pass to Demaryius Thomas for a first down in the game's closing minutes. Manning stayed on the ground following the play, and Broncos trainers briefly looked at his ankle. Manning was also flexing his right knee during the timeout that followed the play.

Manning finished the game but was limping slightly in the locker room afterward.
