KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs claimed wide receiver/kick returner Kyle Williams off waivers Wednesday.
Williams was waived by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday. In his fourth season, Williams had 12 catches this season with zero touchdowns. He also worked some as the 49ers' kickoff and punt return specialist, though this season he averaged only 5.1 yards on punt returns and 19.1 yards on kickoffs.
Where Williams fits with the Chiefs is unclear. Starting wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was arrested last weekend on possession of a controlled substance and speeding charges. Police said the controlled substance was marijuana. The Chiefs said Bowe will play Sunday against the Broncos in Denver, but he could eventually be suspended by the NFL for violating its substance-abuse policy.
The Chiefs are seemingly set at kick returner. Quintin Demps is among the league leaders in kickoff return average. Dexter McCluster had an electrifying 89-yard punt return for a touchdown in a September game against the New York Giants.
McCluster was listed on Kansas City's injury report Wednesday as being a limited practice participant because of a sore ankle.
The Chiefs released wide receiver Chad Hall, who had one catch for 9 yards this season.
