This place was once the site of a small Chinese grocery, and now boasts handcrafted pizza, burgers, late-night menus and an outdoor deck. There also is a Matchbox location on Capitol Hill.

Comedian Bill Cosby made Ben's more popular by holding a news conference here for his "Cosby Show," which in turn helped revitalize U Street. He is the only customer allowed to eat for free, according to a handmade sign. Food is inexpensive here, with most chili items going for less than $6, including the famous Cosby Chili Half-Smoke for $5.20, according to the website. Owner Ben Ali died in 2009. Ben's has served everyone from President Barack Obama to loyal neighborhood customers and is open until 4 a.m. on weekends.

You won't have time to see all of the Smithsonian's 17 museums, but you can hardly take in more information for free. The Smithsonian includes everything from the Air and Space Museum to the Washington Zoo. Taking public transportation is best, as parking is very limited.

The meeting place of the nation's legislature, the Capitol is located at the east end of the Mall. The Capitol is a striking building inside and out. The House Gallery is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Capitol Visitor Center is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
