Match the hitter with at-bat music

Music means a lot to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

For example, Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp considers himself a music guru. For a long time, second baseman Mark Loretta would walk up to bat to the old War song "Low Rider" because it sounded like his last name. And, as mentioned in a previous Batter's Hit Box, outfielder Juan Pierre's name was used in Beyonce's "Deja Vu," featuring Jay-Z, prompting Pierre to use that as his at-bat song.

Being in the center of the entertainment industry helps the Dodgers' connection to many genres, as a steady stream of musicians ranging from the Jonas Brothers to Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers come through Dodger Stadium to mingle with players.

But last season, music took on bigger psychological importance after third baseman Casey Blake plugged in "Paper Planes" by MIA and it turned into the team's unofficial clubhouse anthem and good luck charm.

"We found a song last year that we started playing right when we kinda went on a roll," Blake said. "And so we just started playing that before the game and after the game when we won. It was kind of a team thing."

The song helped inspire the team's run to the National League West Division title, but the Dodgers' pitching was missing in action during the loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL Championship Series.

L.A. has a seven-game lead in the NL West division with two months left in the season, so perhaps Blake and the Dodgers should start looking for a rallying tune by ... And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead.
