I'm not from Palo Alto, nor did I go to Stanford, but I'm in awe at Stanford University's sheer dominance in collegiate sports. They have won 13 consecutive Director's Cup trophies, claiming the best overall athletic program in the nation.

In the last 13 years, men's and women's tennis, swimming, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball, water polo and golf have all seen conference or national titles. Even football made a trip to the Rose Bowl as recently as 2000.

Stanford has won 109 national championships. Of these, 95 are NCAA team championships. Of the 95 championships, 58 are in men's sports and 37 are in women's sports, the most of any university.

Tiger Woods, John Elway, John McEnroe, Jim Plunkett, Pop Warner and Tom Watson are among the great athletes to play at Stanford.

And it doesn't stop with Stanford. Palo Alto High School ("Paly") is home of boys basketball state champions in 1993 and 2006. The football team also won the CCS championship in 2006 and 2007.

In 2002, Newsweek named it among the Top 200 public schools in the country according to test scores. In 2007, US News & World Report ranked it No. 85 out of over 18,000 public schools.

For a small town, Palo Alto provides quite a punch.
