Smith named starter against Oklahoma
DENTON, Texas -- Sophomore Andrew Smith will start at quarterback Saturday when North Texas plays No. 1 Oklahoma, but junior Scott Hall is expected to get plenty of playing time, coach Darrell Dickey said Tuesday.
"How we choose when and where to play them depends on how the game unfolds," Dickey said in a story in Wednesday's Sherman Herald Democrat. "It's a good situation when you're playing two quarterbacks you've got a lot of confidence in."
Dickey said because the two play similar styles, the offense doesn't have to change depending on who is quarterback.
Hall led UNT to its first Sun Belt Conference title in 2001. Then he tore a pectoral muscle before last season's opener and Smith helped the Mean Green defend their league title and even win a bowl game for the first time in 56 years.
"I thought it may be better for Scott to come in from the sideline. Andrew has won seven straight games, and there was not a lot of separation between the two, so I left it the way it was," Dickey said. He said the team is comfortable with both at quarterback.
North Texas plays Arkansas Sept. 20 in Little Rock.
