McGrady expected to be healthy for training camp

ORLANDO, Fla. -- NBA scoring champion Tracy McGrady is expected to be healed from a back injury when the Orlando Magic start training camp next month.

McGrady sat out the last 2{ games of the Olympic qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico because of a sprain, and most likely won't suit up again for the U.S. team. Over the past two NBA seasons, back spasms have kept him out of nine games.

"We're anticipating that this is manageable," Magic spokesman Joel Glass said Wednesday.

McGrady, averaging 14.5 points in four tournament games, was in street clothes Tuesday while the Americans beat Argentina 94-86.

"Nothing I can do right now except get my treatment and rest," McGrady said. "If I continue to play, it's going to make matters worse. So I'm just going to sit out the rest of the tournament unless something really happens."

McGrady also sat out Monday's game against Canada, staying at the team's hotel, and the second half of Saturday's victory over the U.S. Virgin Islands. He is expected to remain in Puerto Rico through the tournament's end Sunday.

Last season, McGrady averaged a career-best 32.1 points, holding off Kobe Bryant for the scoring title.

The Magic open training camp Sept. 29 at a site to be determined.
