FARGO, N.D. -- North Dakota State University is getting a new buffalo-head logo, and help from an athletic apparel maker in buying new football uniforms for road games.

The logo, designed by Matt Mastrud, of Fargo, is the first NDSU Bison logo to display only a buffalo head. It has a more three-dimensional look, Mastrud said.

"We struggled with capturing the fierce look of the buffalo, but not being mean and overaggressive," he said. "And we also had to fit it in with the existing logo design."

The buffalo head will appear at first on the road pants for NDSU's football team, coaches' shirts on game days, and on baseball caps and jerseys.

The new logo design coincides with the introduction of a new Bison road football uniform. Nike Inc., the athletic shoe and apparel maker, is contributing $15,000 for the new gear, besides providing discounts for future purchases of uniforms and equipment.

Gene Taylor, North Dakota State's athletic director, said the school had to buy new uniform pants, which cost about $4,500. NDSU paid about $15,000 for its road uniforms last year.

The uniforms will have green numbers on white jerseys. The existing uniforms have yellow numbers on white jerseys, which spectators often found hard to read.

"There were times I would get out my binoculars, and my spotter would get out his binoculars, and we could barely make out the numbers," said Scott Miller, who does play-by-play of Bison football for WDAY Radio of Fargo. "This will make it a lot easier for us, and a lot easier for fans to follow the game on the radio."

Taylor said the Nike deal will be beneficial.

"We were able to get new uniforms for the same cost it would have taken us to fix the jerseys," Taylor said.
