MARANA, Ariz. -- A brief look at the first round of the Match Play Championship on Thursday on the Ritz-Carlton Club at Dove Mountain:

The 1-2 knockout: Rory McIlroy (1) and Tiger Woods (2) lost their matches, only the second time in the event's 15-year history that the top two seeds were gone after one day.

Advancing: Shane Lowry beat McIlroy, 1 up. Charles Howell III beat Woods, 2 and 1.

Top seeds: Luke Donald (3) birdied the last two holes to beat Marcel Siem, 1 up. Louis Oosthuizen (4) won four straight holes and rallied to beat Richie Ramsay, 2 and 1.

Shortest day: Bo Van Pelt only had to play two shots to finish his win over John Senden, 6 and 5.

Biggest turnaround: Rafael Cabrera Bello never led in his match against Lee Westwood until a birdie to win on the 19th hole.

Match of the day: Woods and Howell didn't make a bogey between them, and Howell's fourth birdie was a 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole for a 2-up lead.

Shot of the day: Shane Lowry hit fairway metal to 3 feet for a conceded eagle against McIlroy.

Unfinished business: Two matches were not completed because of darkness. Carl Pettersson was 1 up over Rickie Fowler through 17 holes, while Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Francesco Molinari were all square through 15.

Early departure: Six of the top 10 seeds were eliminated -- Rory McIlroy (1), Tiger Woods (2), Adam Scott (6), Lee Westwood (7), Charl Schwartzel (9) and Jason Dufner (10).

Quote of the day: "Deep down, I knew I could beat him. There's a reason I'm here, and this is match play." -- Shane Lowry.

Stat of the day: The previous three players who beat the No. 1 seed all lost in the second round.

Friday's key matches: Sergio Garcia vs. Matt Kuchar; Jim Furyk vs. Bubba Watson; Ian Poulter vs. Bo Van Pelt; Justin Rose vs. Nicolas Colsaerts.

Forecast: The snow is gone, with the potential for frost delays in the morning.
