California Chrome wins Cal Cup Derby

ARCADIA, Calif. -- California Chrome won the $250,000 California Cup Derby by 5½ lengths at Santa Anita on Saturday, one of six stakes on the card.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, California Chrome ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.22 and paid $7, $3.80 and $3.20 as the 5-2 second choice in the field of 10. The colt was coming off a six-length win in the King Glorious Stakes on Dec. 22.

"I thought he would run awesome," trainer Art Sherman said. "He'd been training like a bomb."

Tamarando returned $3.40 and $2.60 as the 9-5 favorite. Life Is a Joy was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $4.60 to show.

The victory, worth $137,500, increased California Chrome's career earnings to $352,350.

In the $250,000 Cal Cup Turf Classic, Weewinnin won by 2 1/4 lengths under Joe Talamo.

The 21-1 shot ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:46 and paid $44.80, $22 and $10.40.

Weewinnin earned $137,500, increasing his career winnings to $281,880, with three victories in six starts.

Stoney Fleece returned $11.40 and $6.40, while Jules Journey was another $4.20 to show. Summer Hit, the 6-5 favorite, tired badly and finished ninth.

In the $200,000 Cal Cup Oaks for state-bred 3-year-old fillies, 65-1 shot Susans Express won by 1 1/4 lengths in her first race on the turf.

Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Susans Express ran a mile in 1:34.72 and paid $132.40, $44.20 and $20.60. She ended a four-race skid.

Susans Express earned $120,000, giving her career winnings of $153,140. It was first stakes win in the U.S. for trainer and co-owner Jorge Periban, who is from Mexico.

Anniversary Kitty returned $8.40 and $6.60, while Rovenna was another length back in third and paid $8.20 to show.

In the $200,000 Santa Monica Stakes, Scherzinger rallied to win by a length under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.

Scherzinger ran seven furlongs in 1:22 and paid $10.60, $5.20 and $2.80 for trainer and co-owner Jerry Hollendorfer. The victory, worth $120,000, increased Scherzinger's career earnings to $245,374, with four wins in seven starts.

Iotapa returned $5.60 and $3, while 7-5 favorite Teddy's Promise was another half-length back in third and paid $2.40 to show.

In the $125,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint, Ciao Bella Lunawon by a half-length under Desormeaux.

Trained by Peter Miller, Ciao Bella Luna ran 6½ furlongs on the hillside turf course in 1:1281 and paid $13, $6.40 and $4.80.

The victory, worth $75,000, increased Ciao Bella Luna's career earnings to $262,110, with four wins in 12 starts.

Marks Mine returned $10.40 and $6.40, while Tribal Spy was a head back in third and paid $7.60 to show. Unusual Hottie, the 3-1 favorite, was fourth.

In the $125,000 Cal Cup Sprint, Big Macher won by 4 3/4 lengths under Rafael Bejarano after running six furlongs in 1:08.62.

The 4-year-old gelding paid $6.20, $4.20 and $3.80. He earned $75,000, increasing his career winnings to $146,428, with three wins in eight starts.

Coach Bob returned $14.20 and $13.80 at 23-1 odds. Kate's Event was another half-length back in third and paid $8 to show.
