Alabama A&M 79, Texas Southern 73
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Cornelius Hester scored 22 points and Mickell Gladness had 16 blocks Saturday night to help lead Alabama A&M to a 79-73 victory over Texas Southern and set a new NCAA Division I record.
Alabama A&M (9-18) had a team total of 21 blocks to tie the NCAA's team record and snap a seven game Southwestern Athletic Conference losing streak.
Gladness had already led the nation in blocked shots, but surpassed the record 14 held by Navy's David Robinson, BYU's Shawn Bradley, Alabama's Roy Rogers and Arizona's Loren Woods.
Gladness also finished with 13 rebounds and seven points.
Texas Southern (13-13) had a late rally and came within two points with 1:58 to play. The Bulldogs had led by as much as 16 with 5:20 left in the game.
Evan Hilton hit 5-7 free throws to seal the win. He finished with 13 points while Trant Simpson added 11 and Jonathan Inman had 10.
Sollie Norwood led the Tigers with 15 points and Jaques Jones added 13. Chris Moore had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Leonta Matthews had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Texas Southern shot just 27 percent from the floor.
