Redskins RB Portis downgraded to doubtful

ASHBURN, Virginia - The Washington Redskins downgraded running back Clinton Portis to doubtful for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Portis missed practice for the third straight day on Friday due to soreness in his left shoulder. He dislocated the shoulder in Washington's first preseason game last month.

"He (Portis) hasn't been able to get the soreness out of there," Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said after Friday's practice. "It kept from practicing this week, so we'll downgrade him (from questionable to doubtful)."

Portis played in the season-opening loss to Minnesota on Monday, rushing for 39 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Despite being downgraded to doubtful, Portis did not rule himself out for Sunday night at Dallas.

"All I know is, this bag is going to Dallas," Portis said. "You guys have seen some miracle things happen."

Gibbs doesn't expect Portis to play on Sunday night.

"I think if a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play," Gibbs said. "But he'll probably tell me that he can play on game day."

Ladell Betts and T.J. Duckett will likely get the majority of the carries for the Redskins on Sunday night. Betts had eight carries for 22 yards in the loss to Minnesota.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Portis rushed for a franchise-record 1,516 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
