Bears part with OL J'Marcus Webb
Webb was one of 14 players waived as was running back Armando Allen. The Bears also terminated the contracts of quarterbacks Jordan Palmer and Trent Edwards along with guard Edwin Williams, putting their roster at 58 active players. They must get it down to 53 by 5 p.m. CT on Saturday.
Webb had already announced on Twitter that he was gone by the time the Bears confirmed it, posting, "Good bye, Chicago! I gave you 3 years of me."
He also wrote, "It'll be good to have a fresh start. 3 years of starting with no injuries? Ill be ok. I'm no different than many of you. Change is good."
A seventh-round draft pick out of West Texas A&M in 2010, the Bears believed Webb had all the physical tools to succeed at 6-foot-7 and 333 pounds. He started 44 games over three seasons -- 12 at right tackle as a rookie and 16 at left tackle each of the past two seasons. He was inconsistent, missing blocking assignments, and dropped on the depth chart. An enduring image from last season was Jay Cutler berating and bumping him during a game at Green Bay.
The Bears added left tackle Jermon Bushrod in the offseason and essentially handed the starting right tackle job to Webb, only to have him lose it in the preseason. Now, they're going with fifth-round pick Jordan Mills at that spot, with first-rounder Kyle Long at right guard along with Bushrod and guard Matt Slauson on the left side.
Signed two weeks ago after third-stringer Matt Blanchard broke a knuckle on his left, non-throwing hand, Palmer played the first half of Thursday's final preseason game against Cleveland and looked sharp. He completed 11 of 17 passes for 111 yards, then acknowledged afterward that he'd thought his playing days were over and that he was planning to visit Europe with his wife next week.
Edwards came on in the second half against the Browns and threw for 135 yards.
The Bears also waived tight end Fendi Onobun, guard Derek Dennis, linebacker Jerry Franklin, receiver Brittan Golden, long snapper Brandon Hartson, cornerback Demontre Hurst, receiver Josh Lenz, safety Tom Nelson, defensive tackle Christian Tupou, fullback Harvey Unga, defensive end Aston Whiteside and defensive end Josh Williams.
