CLIP REEL: THE WOES OF THE MAVERICKS

For a team with boatloads of talent—Dirk, Nash, Kidd, Howard, even Dampier!—and an owner who really seems to care, the Dallas Mavericks haven't jumped that final hurdle yet. Sure, sure; they've been to the playoffs every year since 2000-2001 and even reached the Finals once. But they've also suffered one of the worst first-round defeats ever. Today, we turn our "broader historical context link dump" feature, Clip Reel, on Dallas.

2000-2001
The Mavs were bounced by the Spurs, 4-1, in the Western semis.

2001-2002
Mavericks again go down in the Western semis, this time to the Kings.

2002-2003
In 2003, the Mavericks made the Western Conference Finals—and lost to the Spurs.
In that series, Steve Kerr just went nuts from long range.

2003-2004
Mike Bibby owned them as the Kings beat them 4-1 in the first round.
Game 5 was ugly to watch.

2004-2005
The Suns took down Dallas in the '05 Western semis.
Boris Diaw had a filthy series against the Mavs, showcased as part of this video.

2005-2006
The Mavs finally made the Finals!
And then, uh, they ran into this.
Here's another way to look at it.

2006-2007
Dirk and the Mavs had an UNBELIEVABLE regular season in '06-'07.
Then, the Warriors went and shocked them.
And obviously, Cuban wasn't very happy.

2007-2008
It's hard to ball against Chris Paul and company.
