Michael Vick is not the only one working construction this summer. A couple weeks ago I hammered nails alongside three-time Super Bowl quarterback Kurt Warner, building homes for Habitat for Humanity in his hometown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which was slammed by a devastating flood last June.
Warner is not handy. He swings a hammer like a stripper killing a beetle with a high heel. But his First Things First Foundation raised $650,000 for the project and he worked his tail off helping out, so why nitpick? The only worse misfit was me. I should've never been there, since I've been working on a spice rack at home for 13 years now. I noticed a guy surreptitiously trailing behind us most of the day, perhaps fixing all the damage we'd done. Still, officials said we only set the project back a couple weeks, tops.
The best part, though, was when I asked the foreman what the dumbest thing one of his volunteers had done on site.
He recalled: "Had to be the woman who came up to me and said, 'Gosh, your Port-O-Potties are so nice. They even have little purse holders on the side!'" He couldn't bear to tell her what the purse holder actually was.
