When Mike & Mike asked listeners what Alex Rodriguez's 600 home runs meant to them, the response could be summed up as, "wake me up when Albert Pujols gets there." I have to say, fans are way off on this one.
Why are people rooting so hard for Albert Pujols to break the all-time home run record? Will that change anything? When I asked about this on twitter, people said they're rooting for Pujols because they want, "integrity restored to the game." What a pile of garbage that is. If numbers 3 through 8 on the home run list are all guys linked to PEDs, you could have Mother Teresa at the top of the list and integrity still wouldn't be restored to the game.
People also said that Albert Pujols as the home run king would "give people hope that players don't need juice to have home run power." Really? Has anyone ever heard of Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays? I'm pretty sure they had some decent home run power long before players were using steroids. Now all of a sudden we need reassurance that people can hit home runs? Calm down, Chicken Little. The sky is doing just fine.
As much as we may want it to, the steroid era isn't going away. On Thursday Golic mentioned a time when the steroid era would be over, but that's the thing - it'll never be over. Just because baseball has better testing policies doesn't mean players are just going to give up looking for an edge. That is why the whole revelation of widespread PED use in baseball was so damaging to begin with. We all knew that the game would never be the same again because baseball would always be locked in an eternal struggle against science.
We should stop trying to pretend like we're all outraged by what we saw. When Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were hitting home runs out of parks like ping pong balls in 1998, the whole country loved every second of it. Just because that year doesn't look as good to us twelve years later doesn't mean we didn't enjoy it at the time. "The Dark Knight" was the greatest sequel of all time, but that doesn't make "Batman Begins" any less of a movie.
We need to stop pretending that baseball has been played the same way since its inception. Throughout the years, we've seen the dead ball era and the designated hitter, not to mention the pitcher's mound being lowered after the 1968 season. Why doesn't anyone ever bring that up when talking about offensive numbers?
Let me be clear. I'm not saying I think we should throw our hands in the air and allow PEDs because it will give us enjoyment in the moment. I'm saying that we don't have anything to be ashamed of just because we enjoyed watching baseball during the steroid era. Just like we'll enjoy watching the games now that some form of testing is in place.
