On this day in 1998, the United States women's hockey team struck gold at the Nagano Olympics. Six countries were in the field at the inaugural tournament -- the top five finishers at the previous world championships and host nation Japan. Facing reigning four-time world champion Canada in the title game, Sandra Whyte led Team USA with a goal and two assists in the 3-1 victory. It was the United States' first win at a major tournament. Widely considered an upset at the time, Canada has undoubtedly avenged the loss by winning the next three Olympic gold medals. The longtime rival nations are expected to meet once again for the gold medal this week in Sochi -- first the United States plays Sweden and Canada plays Switzerland in semifinals today.
