Celebrating an icy anniversary

Cammi Granato and the United States skated off with the first Olympic gold medal in women's ice hockey.

It's hard to believe that the first women’s ice hockey game in Olympic history was played on this date in 1998, especially since women have been taking slap shots since the late 19th century. During the Winter Games in Nagano, Finland took on and defeated Sweden 6-0 in the tournament opener. The United States, led by captain Cammi Granato, came home with the sport's first gold medal on Feb. 17 -- scoring five victories in five games, including a win over Canada in the final -- while the Finns finished third. Now, 15 years later ice hockey is one of the fastest growing women's sports in the world.
