Salute to Hawaii's stars
On this day in 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state in the United States. The proclamation, signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, gave an American birthplace to several noteworthy sports stars, including golfer Michelle Wie, snowboarder Elena Hight, soccer player Natasha Kai, wrestler Clarissa Chun and surfer Bethany Hamilton. Hawaii also is home to the Rainbow Wahine women’s volleyball team, which has won three NCAA titles (1982, 1983 and 1987). The Rainbow Wahine are ranked 11th in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll and open their season Aug. 30 against defending champion and preseason No. 1 Texas at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
