Having a Ball with Lucies
On this day in 1951, “I Love Lucy” made its historic premiere. So we’ve decided to have a Ball by running a double feature of Lucys – or Lucies – on the WTA Tour. Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic has won three Grand Slam doubles titles in her career, most recently the 2013 US Open women’s doubles, with partner Andrea Hlavackova. Hradecka and Hlavackova took out Serena and Venus Williams in the semifinals en route to the title. Hradecka, who also won the mixed doubles title at the French Open in 2013, is currently ranked 10th in the world in doubles. The 28-year-old Hradecka has earned nearly $3 million in her career. The top-ranked singles Lucie on the WTA Tour, though, is Lucie Safarova, who is No. 28. Safarova, also of the Czech Republic, has five career singles titles, including one this year at the Bell Challenge last month in Canada. The 26-year-old Safarova has earned more than $4 million in her career. The two Lucies teamed up to help the Czech Republic win the Fed Cup title in 2011 and 2012.
