Irish eyes were definitely smiling when Michelle Smith took home four medals at the 1996 Olympics.

Happy birthday, Michelle Smith de Bruin! The most decorated Irish Olympian in history turns 44 today. The winner of three gold medals (400-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley, 400-meter individual medley) and a bronze (200-meter butterfly) at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Smith single-handedly helped Ireland earn its second-largest medal haul at one Olympics with four. Smith was banned for four years by FINA in 1998 for tampering with a urine sample, and her competitive swimming career ended as a result. Today Smith is a practicing barrister in Dublin.
