Windward knocks off No. 1 Mater Dei

Make way for a new No. 1.

Windward, the No. 5 team in the espnW 25 Power Rankings, cruised to a 61-46 win over No. 1 Mater Dei Friday night in California's Southern Section Open Division final at Azusa Pacific University.

Point guard Jordin Canada, the No. 6 prospect in the espnW HoopGurlz Top 100 and a UCLA commit, led a balanced Windward (26-2) attack with 14 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Kristen Simon, a USC signee, and freshman Chelsey Gipson had 15 apiece, and Macchi Smith added 14.

Katie Lou Samuelson, the No. 2 prospect in the espnW HoopGurlz Super 60, led Mater Dei (25-2) with 14 points.

The teams could meet again in two weeks in a California regional final.

Meanwhile, the No. 2 team in the nation, Blackman (34-1) made a bid to keep the national title in Tennessee with a 65-44 win over Ridgeway in state AAA championship game on Saturday. Sophomore Crystal Dangerfield was named tournament MVP.

A year ago, Riverdale (Tenn.) won the national title after a 35-0 season.
