Windward, Mater Dei upset in California

The madness has officially begun. At least on the high school courts.

Windward, the No. 2 team in the espnW 25 Power Rankings, and Mater Dei, ranked fifth, both lost Tuesday night in the CIF State tournament Open Division regional semifinals, ending their hopes for both state and national titles.

No. 21 Etiwanda (22-6) got 21 points from USC signee Amy Okonkwo and knocked off top-seeded Windward 49-48.

No. 10 Long Beach Poly (25-3) got 17 points and nine rebounds from UCLA signee Lajahna Drummer to topple second-seeded Mater Dei 64-46.

Etiwanda and Long Beach Poly meet on Saturday in the California regional final. The winner of that game takes on the winner of Miramonte vs. No. 24 Salesian in the state final.

Tennessee state champion Blackman (34-1) is ranked No. 1 in the espnW 25 Power Rankings.
