Former JGR teammates trade barbsBRISTOL, Tenn. -- Joey Logano was tired of getting pushed around by his former Joe Gibbs Racing teammate.
So after Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway, in which Denny Hamlin spun him out with about 150 laps remaining, Logano decided to let him know it.
But as Logano leaned into the window of Hamlin's No. 11 Toyota, a shoving match broke out between the crews of both teams. Logano quickly was restrained and retreated to his Penske Racing hauler. We've got a freaking genius behind the wheel of the 11. Probably the worst teammate I ever had, so I learned that now. He chose to run into the back of me. Whatever. I have a scorecard and I'm not putting up with that. What goes around come around.Joey Logano on Denny Hamlin
"We've got a freaking genius behind the wheel of the 11," Logano said. "Probably the worst teammate I ever had, so I learned that now. He chose to run into the back of me. Whatever. I have a scorecard and I'm not putting up with that.
"What goes around come around."
Hamlin apologized on the radio for getting into Logano, who was battling Jeff Gordon for the lead. He said the incident didn't have anything to do with the exchange the two had on Twitter following the Daytona 500 in which Hamlin questioned Logano's driving.
"No, it didn't have anything to do with that," Hamlin said. "You've really got to control your car, and he slipped up into me. Really, he would have been in the garage with no radiator in it if I had not checked up twice.
"I just, you know, I meant to run in to him. I didn't mean to spin him out, but his day was fine."
Asked what Logano said to him at the car, Hamlin said, "He said he was coming for me. I usually don't see him, so it's usually not a factor."
NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said no penalties were expected for either driver or team.
This isn't the first time Hamlin and Logano have exchanged barbs.
Shortly after the Daytona 500, Hamlin sent a message to Logano teammate Brad Keselowski on Twitter.
"@keselowski sorry I couldn't get close to you cuz your genius teammate was too busy messing up the inside line 1 move at a time" Hamlin wrote.
Clint Bowyer responded: "2nd that."
Logano, who was Hamlin's teammate at JGR from 2008-12, replied, "@DennyHamlin, I Remember when you were MY genius teammate. #LoveYouMeanIt."
Logano insisted he didn't do anything wrong at Daytona.
"No,'' he said. "[Denny] was acting like an idiot."
Logano felt he had a car capable of winning on Sunday. Despite his finish, he moved up three spots to 12th in the standings. Hamlin fell two spots to sixth.
"It's frustrating when you've got a car that can possibly win it, and to get taken out for something like that is just frustrating," Logano said. "This team deserves better."
Asked if he sent a message by confronting Hamlin after the race, Logano said, "I'm not gonna get run over and not do something about it. I'm gonna at least talk to him, so I'm done."
The feud continued on Twitter after the race with Logano writing, "Hey @dennyhamlin great job protecting that genius brain of yours by keeping your helmet on."
Hamlin answered: "Why's that ... What would u do?''
The Logano-Hamlin spat made for fun fodder from others.
Kyle Busch, who finished second, said he has no problem with his former teammate.
"I love Joey. I think he's a good little racer,'' Busch said. "He works really hard, too."p> Busch said he didn't see what happened between Hamlin and Logano on the track.p> "I just heard the crowd,'' he said. "It's a little disheartening that we can't all just get along."
