Fire alarm forces brief evacuation

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A fire alarm forced a brief evacuation of the Connecticut Tennis Center as players were preparing for the start of Thursday's quarterfinals of the New Haven Open.

Tournament spokesman Matt Van Tuinen said the alarm was triggered by smoke from some cooking being done in the players' lounge shortly before noon.

The evacuation lasted less than 15 minutes and affected mostly players, staff and media.

The quarterfinals were set to begin at 1 p.m., but there were few fans in the building because of a steady rain Thursday morning.
