Nine sons of IX ... and their athlete moms
The Earnhardts. The Griffeys. The Mannings. Sports history is peppered with famous father-son combinations. It's time moms got their due, too. Consider this our belated Mother's Day bouquet. Fact is, Title IX has helped create a different kind of soccer mom -- ones who don't coordinate the car pool but instead dominate the gene pool. Imagine growing up like Tyler Summitt did, with a mother like Pat (shown here with her son) to offer advice on your jumper, while reminding you to eat your veggies. Active and accomplished, the nine women we highlight here have done more than pass on their skills to gifted sons. They've shown that role models don't have to be bound by gender, and "mama's boy" is no insult.
