Cast your vote for the 2003 ESPY winners

ESPN Release

In a new element for the 2003 ESPY Awards Presented by General Motors, winners in 17 individual sport categories -- such as Best NHL Player, Best NBA Player, Best Female Tennis Player and Best Jockey -- will be decided on by the fans. Nominees in these 17 of the 33 total ESPY categories will be posted on the Internet where fans can vote for the winners. ESPN will televise the 11th annual ESPY Awards live from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, July 16 at 9 p.m. ET.

Voting will be conducted June 13-27 on for all 17 fan voting categories (see list below), while sport-specific voting will also be available on participating league and industry web sites. Totals will be tallied from all sites to determine the winners, which will be announced July 16 as part of the ESPY Awards telecasts.

The winners in the remaining 16 ESPY Awards categories will be chosen by the returning ESPY Academy, an industry-wide panel consisting of legendary athletes and coaches as well as nationally recognized print and broadcast journalists. Those categories are mostly the cross-cutter ESPY Awards, which pit athletes from different sports against each other (e.g. - Best Female Athlete, Best Team, Best Game).

"By giving fans a voice in the process, they will have a more active role in this industry-wide sports celebration," said Mike Antinoro, ESPY Awards Senior Coordinating Producer. "Fan voting is a great addition to the show as it will capture year-round debate -- a foundation of sports -- and turn it into meaningful results."
