Arthur Ashe Award

The Ashe Award is one of the most prestigious in sports. Winners reflect the spirit of Arthur Ashe, showing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost. The inspiration for the award is the life Arthur lived, using his fame and stature to advocate for human rights, though at the time those positions may have been unpopular and were often controversial. From speaking out against apartheid in South Africa to revealing his struggle with AIDS to the world, Arthur never backed away from a difficult issues, though doing so would have been more comfortable. The Ashe Award strives to be more like Arthur, and reflect his legacy in their own lives -- inspired by those who do so each day.

Showing historic courage in 1992, Jim Valvano was diagnosed with cancer and told he had a year to live. He bravely fought the disease, and vowed that he would spend the rest of his life raising money to help find a cure for cancer. His V Foundation has been a leader in funding cancer research, and his acceptance speech at the inaugural ESPY Awards has become the stuff of legend:

"To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special."

Steve Palermo
On July 7, 1991, MLB umpire Steve Palermo was dining after a Texas Rangers game when he was alerted that two waitresses were being mugged in the parking lot. In an attempt to apprehend the assailants, Steve suffered a bullet wound to his spinal cord, resulting in instant paralysis to the lower extremities.

Doctors told Palermo and his wife, Debbie, that he would probably never walk again. Through rehabilitation and a lot of determination, however, Palermo managed to recover, walking with the use of one small leg brace and a cane. He was presented the Ashe Award for showing such courage in the face of danger.

Cosell repeatedly stood up for what he thought was right, taking unpopular stands on many issues, and defending figures, like Muhammad Ali, who were vilified by most of the mainstream press. He used his forum in sports broadcasting to speak up for those who couldn't speak for themselves, even when it was not the popular or accepted thing to do.
1996Loretta Claiborne
Loretta Claiborne
Loretta Claiborne was the middle of seven children in a poor, single-parent family. Born partially blind and mildly retarded, she was unable to walk or talk until age 4.

Eventually, though, she began to run. And before she knew it, she had crossed the finish line of 25 marathons, twice placing among the top 100 women in the Boston Marathon. She's carried the torch in the International Special Olympics, has won medals in dozens of events, and also holds the current women's record in her age group for the 5000 meters at 17 minutes.

Claiborne continues helping people with mental retardation and physical disabilities succeed. She advises them, "Find an opportunity and seize it. Be the best you can be, and never let anyone doubt you."
1997Muhammad Ali
Muhammad Ali
Muhammad Ali showed courage when others would not.

Ali's actions in refusing military service and aligning himself with the Nation of Islam made him a lightning rod for controversy, turning the outspoken but popular former champion into one of that era's most recognizable and controversial figures. Appearing at Nation of Islam rallies declaring his allegiance to the group at a time when mainstream America viewed it with suspicion (if not outright hostility) made Ali a target of outrage and suspicion. Near the end of 1967, Ali was stripped of his title by the professional boxing commission for refusing induction into the army, and would not be allowed to fight professionally for more than three years. Though hated and feared by many at the time, Ali has been proven courageous by history.
1998Dean Smith
Dean Smith
Smith coached UNC from 1961 to 1997 and finished his career with a then record 879 wins. While there, he helped promote desegregation by recruiting North Carolina's first black scholarship player, Charlie Scott, and pushing for equal treatment for blacks by local businesses.

In 1964, Smith joined a local pastor and a black UNC theology student to integrate The Pines, a Chapel Hill restaurant, and in 1965, Smith helped Howard Lee, a black graduate student at UNC, purchase a home in an all-white neighborhood. Many of the players and coaches that Smith worked with at UNC went on to achieve notable success.

Billie Jean King
As one of the most successful tennis players, male or female, in history, Billie Jean King has shown her strength on and off of the court as an advocate for women's sports. She founded the Women's Tennis Association in 1973 and the Women's Sports Foundation in 1974 to increase opportunities for female participation in sports. Her dedication to the cause of women's athleticism and fearlessness to stand up for what she believes in made her the recipient of the 1999 Ashe Award.
2000Dave Sanders

Columbine High School teacher William "Dave" Sanders lost his life in the tragic April 1999 shooting. A coach for 25 years in softball, track and basketball, Sanders had mentored more students than he could count, and on that day, he gave his life for them. The assailants gunned down Sanders, but not before he alerted hundreds of students to the impending melee and directed many of them to safety. Many students, friends and family members remembered a man who set an example of fairness, sportsmanship, and caring for students and faculty alike.

Cathy Freeman
Cathy Freeman, chosen to light the Olympic torch at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, represented the oppressed Aboriginal people of Australia.

Winning gold in the 400m, she became her nation's first indigenous person to win an individual Olympic Gold medal. She had been warned by the government not to make a demonstration on the Olympic stage, but ignoring the threats, she took the opportunity of her moment in the spotlight to speak for those who could not, a generation that had been lost to violence and oppression. Her action of carrying the aboriginal flag was seen by many as very controversial, but was ultimately a heroic act. She has done much work for the Aboriginal population to ensure that they have healthcare and are not forgotten by Australian government.

Todd Beamer, Mark Bingham, Tom Burnett and Jeremy Glick all played sports passionately. When they were put together in an unthinkable situation, they used what they learned from athletics throughout their lives teamwork. These four men led a charge aboard United 93 that ultimately saved hundreds of lives, while making the ultimate sacrifice.
2003Pat and Kevin Tillman
Pat and Kevin Tillman
Pat and Kevin Tillman, in the midst of professional sports careers, chose to give up those dream jobs to serve their country. Pat Tillman, a safety for the Arizona Cardinals, turned down a $3.6 million contract to enlist in the Army Rangers shortly after September 11th, and was joined in the Rangers by his brother Kevin, who left behind a promising career in professional baseball. The Tillman brothers declined any requests to tell their story publicly. The brothers turned their back on stardom and potential fortune, dedicated themselves to a larger cause, and never once sought glory or recognition.

Liberian-born UNICEF Ambassador and Africa's all-time greatest soccer player has worked tirelessly and at great risk to help his war-torn country. Despite a comfortable life as a sports celebrity, Weah chose to return to Liberia to help reintegrate the child soldiers who had fought the civil war back into society, counseling and educating them in vocational training and the spread of HIV/AIDS, among other things. He also gave $2 million dollars of his own money to finance a national soccer team, so that the citizens of Liberia would have something to be proud of.

Jim MacLaren and Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah
These two men embody the toughness of spirit and never-give-up attitude. Jim MacLaren has survived two would-be fatal accidents and has risen to every challenge life has put in his path. An All-American football player at Yale University, he was hit by a bus at the age of 22 and lost a leg. He battled back to become a top marathoner and Ironman Triathlete, racing against and beating able-bodied competition. Then, eight years after the first accident, he was struck again during a triathlon, rendering him quadriplegic, but once again, he defied the odds and regained partial use of his limbs. His motivational speaking inspired many, but no one more so than Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah. Emmanuel would go on to single-handedly change the perception of the disabled in his country of Ghana by riding a bicycle across the country.

Just five years removed from Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, these girls helped spark a women's revolution by coming together to play soccer. They showed the same courage that Ashe did when he went to South Africa to play tennis during apartheid: using sports to further freedom. These girls play knowing that they are risking their lives in order to do so.

After four decades of sectarian violence, we honored a Catholic and a Protestant who, though they had been bred to hate each other, found a way to overcome their prejudice for the sake of the future of their country. They came together on a basketball court and used a game to teach children in their country how to play together and live together. They did so at great personal risk but knowing that there was no hope for the future if they could not move on from the past.

Tommie Smith and John Carlos
For USA sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos, running the 200m men's final in the 1968 Olympics was the easy part. When Smith and Carlos took to the medal stand to receive their respective gold and bronze medals, they used the moment to bring awareness to the mistreatment of black Americans. As the American national anthem played, the two men bowed their heads and raised a gloved black fist into the night air.

Both men were unaware that the consequences of their silent gesture would be swift and grave. They were kicked off the Olympic team and sent back to a country that rejected their actions and explanations. Forty years later, and only weeks before the 2008 Games, Smith and Carlos received the Arthur Ashe Award. After years of discussion and social ratification, Smith and Carlos can finally take their rightful place among sports' greatest heroes.
2009Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela once said, "Sport has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can awaken hope where there was previously only despair."

One of his first acts as president was to bring the Rugby World Cup to South Africa in 1995, and while the national team, the Springboks, had always been the pride of white South Africa, they were also a symbol of oppression and apartheid to black South Africans. Mandela became the number one fan of the Springboks, unifying the country around the team.

At the final game, the chants of more than sixty thousand fans shouting- "NELSON! NELSON! NELSON!" - were but a whisper in comparison to the thunderous cry of millions around the country who had been united by one team, one man, and one simple, but courageous act.
2010The Ed Thomas Family
The Ed Thomas Family
For more than 30 years, the Thomas and Becker families of Parkersburg, Iowa, were bonded together by church, school and their community, and the bond of these two families remains unbroken despite a tragic killing. In June 2009, high school football coach Ed Thomas was shot and killed in the football team's weight room by 24-year old Mark Becker, one of his former players, who had been released from psychiatric care despite severe problems. The Thomas family was the recipient of the 2010 Arthur Ashe Courage Award for their courage to forgive.

"Our family is humbled and honored to be selected as the Arthur Ashe Courage Award winner," said Aaron Thomas, son of Ed Thomas. "This award is a great testament to the type of man my father was. We are merely following his example and what he would expect."
2011Dewey Bozella
Dewey Bozella
For more than 26 years, Dewey Bozella was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. In prison, Bozella channeled his frustration through boxing, which provided him a sense of focus and determination that he carried with him outside the ring. Bozella became a model prisoner: earning his GED, Bachelor's and Master's degrees, helping counsel other prisoners, finding love and getting married, and becoming the light heavyweight champion of Sing Sing Prison.

Over a quarter-century later, Dewey Bozella was released as an innocent man. Today, Dewey devotes his life to helping recently released prisoners integrate back into the world. He also returned to boxing by training kids and aspiring fighters. Dewey Bozella is the recipient of the 2011 Arthur Ashe Award for his courage to never give up fighting.

Perseverance Award

The Jimmy V Perseverance Award was named after and inspired by the late Jimmy Valvano who became the award's raison d'�tre at the 1993 ESPYS. While battling cancer, Jim Valvano gave an emotional acceptance speech which included his famous words "Don't Give Up . . . Don't Ever Give Up!"�. This was Jimmy V's advice to anyone anywhere facing adversity. Valvano passed away less than 2 months later, but his words were never forgotten. The Jimmy V Award is given to a deserving member of the sporting world who has overcome great obstacles through physical perseverance and determination. In 2007, Women's College basketball coach Kay Yow became the very first recipient of the Jimmy V award.

2007 - Kay Yow
During the 2006-2007 season at North Carolina State, Kay Yow took a leave of absence from coaching women's basketball. Her breast cancer had progressed. One of the most successful female coaches in college basketball history, Yow recorded 29 winning seasons, 21 20- win seasons and a career record of 737-344. Not even a 1987 breast cancer diagnosis could stop her will to dominate. For her illustrious career on the court and personal efforts to beat cancer while raising awareness for the disease off the court, Yow was honored at the 2007 ESPYs with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award. Yow passed away in January of 2009, but her spirit was not defeated. Kay Yow showed the most courage in the last days of her life planning her own funeral, which included a 25-minute video she recorded prior to her death. She ended the video with, "and now I bid farewell, it's been a wonderful journey."

In the first game of the 2007 Buffalo Bills season, tight end Kevin Everett lie face down on the field. Unable to move his arms or legs, the only movement in his body came from the struggle to take in oxygen. Everett had sustained a broken neck and spinal damage attempting to tackle a kick returner. At the hospital, doctors immediately assessed the situation and the idea that Everett would never again walk seemed certain. But Everett didn't allow the prognosis to become his destiny, and over the next few months he worked relentlessly, defying the odds and doctors. Just ten months after the injury, Kevin Everett walked on to the stage at the 2008 ESPYs to receive the Jimmy V Perseverance Award. His success in recovery demonstrated every attribute the Jimmy V award stands for and he personifies the words spoken by Jim Valvano some 15 years ago - "Don't give up, don't ever give up."�

2009 - Don Meyer
Don Meyer, Coach for Northern State University, has been a dedicated coach and mentor to all who have known him in college basketball for 38 seasons. But in 2008, his life would change in an instant and he would find himself tested in unimaginable ways when an 18 wheel truck crushed Don's car in a head-on collision. The fully loaded semi-shattered all his ribs, filling his chest with blood. His spleen was destroyed; his diaphragm torn, his left leg pulverized. Worse, during surgery doctors discovered that Meyer had cancer in his liver and intestines that was inoperable. Worse yet, 14 days after that surgery, his leg was amputated below the knee. After 55 days in the hospital, Meyer left in a wheelchair, was at work at 4:45 the next morning, and coached all season without missing a game. On January 10, Meyer won his 903rd game, becoming the all-time winningest coach in men's' college basketball history and setting the record that once seemed out of reach.

Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl is fighting his second bout with cancer. He first defeated prostate cancer in 2005 and now finds himself immersed in a strenuous battle with throat and neck cancer. While undergoing one of the most devastating and debilitating cancer treatment regimens in existence, Karl was forced to miss the end of the NBA regular season as well as the playoffs.

Through it all, Karl has exhibited the kind of toughness that defined his career as a college player at North Carolina and as a professional in the NBA. This toughness has certainly carried over to his coaching career, where he is one of only ten coaches in NBA history with 900 wins. Karl professes a desire to be back on the sideline as soon as possible. "I don't want to be the story," he said. "I just want to be part of this challenge and win my battle, and hopefully win an NBA championship."

"If anyone can get through it all, it�"s George Karl. He�"s one of the toughest guys I�"ve ever been around," said Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks, a former Karl assistant. "He�"s as mentally tough as a human being can be."

For his unwavering fight in the face of tremendous adversity, George Karl was presented with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the 2010 ESPYs on July 14, 2010. The event marked George Karl�"s first public appearance since he last attended a Denver Nugget�"s game on March 16.
2011Anthony Robles
2011-Anthony Robles
Former Arizona State and NCAA Wrestling Champion Anthony Robles was born without a right leg, but he never let anything get in the way of his determination to succeed. At ASU, Robles was a three-time All-American and won the 2011 NCAA 125-pound title in March to end a 36-0 senior year at Arizona State. He was selected as the 2011 Pac-10 Championships and NCAA Wrestling Championships Outstanding Wrestler honoree.

Since earning his NCAA title, Robles graduated in May with a degree in business communications and travels the country as a motivational speaker, addressing wrestling camps and youth groups.
