Best Comeback Athlete
  • Sidney Crosby
  • After struggling with two separate battles against concussion-like symptoms that had him out of action for 10 months, Penguins center Sidney Crosby returned to the lineup in March and recorded 25 points (six goals, 19 assists) in 14 regular-season games.
  • Johan Santana
  • After undergoing shoulder surgery, Mets pitcher Johan Santana found himself sidelined for the 2011 season. He returned to the lineup in 2012 and on June 1, against the Cardinals, he threw the first no-hitter in New York Mets history. The 134-pitch no-hitter came in the franchise's 8,020th game.
  • Maria Sharapova
  • After struggling with a shoulder injury that nearly took her out of the game, Maria Sharapova's long comeback to the top ranks of women's tennis culminated with her victory in the 2012 French Open. That win made her only the 10th woman to complete a career Grand Slam. With the victory, Sharapova re-claimed the World No. 1 ranking -- a position she hadn't held since June 2008.
  • Matthew Stafford
  • After missing all but three games during the 2010 season due to a shoulder injury, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford came back strong in 2011, passing for 5,038 yards and 41 touchdowns on the year.
