- The NFL's single-season passing yards record had been broken four times in six seasons from 1979 to 1984. However, the 5,084-yard mark that Dan Marino set in 1984 was thought to be tough to reach and stood for 27 years. Drew Brees eclipsed that mark with an astounding 5,476 yards through the air.

- It's rare that one reaches the success level of their mentor, but that's just the case with coach Mike Krzyzewski. Coach K won his 903rd career game to break the record for most wins in men's Division I history, previously held by coach Bob Knight. Coach K played for Knight at Army from 1966 to 1969 and actually began his head-coaching career at Army in 1975.

- Perhaps the most feared closer in MLB history, Mariano Rivera notched his 602nd save during a 1-2-3 ninth inning versus the Minnesota Twins. Rivera broke Trevor Hoffman's major league record that day. Even more impressive, Rivera has earned all his saves while with one team, the New York Yankees, giving him the most career saves with a single team, as well.

- At age 12, Lexi Thompson became the youngest golfer ever to qualify to play in the U.S. Women's Open. She turned professional at the age of 15 and just a year later -- at 16 years, seven months and eight days -- she shattered the age record for winning a multiple-round tournament, previously held by Paula Creamer, who won in 2005 at 18.
