ESPN X Games return to San Francisco

San Francisco, Calif. - ESPN returns to the City-by-the-Bay with this summer's anticipated event, the 2000 X Games, August 17th through 22nd at Piers 30/32 on the Embarcadero. The X Games will kick-off with three competitions prior to the main event on the Pier: Skysurfing at the Roche Winery in Sonoma, CA, August 10th-13th , Street Luge at Seal Rock Run on Point Lobos Avenue & The Great Highway, August 11th-13th; and Wakeboarding at Treasure Island's Clipper Cove, August 15th and 16th. All events are free and open to the public.

Last year the X Games drew more than 270,000 spectators to Pier 30/32. "San Francisco proved to be a spectacular host location for us last year," said John Davies, General Manager of the ESPN X Games. "The crowd's energy and vigor during the event was a validation of the city's enthusiasm for alternative sports, and we're committed to making this year's event even more thrilling for the spectators!"

The 2000 X Games will bring more than 350 of the world's best alternative sports athletes to the Bay Area to compete for medals and nearly $1 million in prize money, the industry's largest prize purse. Competitors seamlessly defy gravity and test fate by launching off jumps, sliding down rails, spinning and flipping overhead in Aggressive In-Line Skating, Bicycle Stunt, Freestyle Moto X, Skateboarding, Skysurfing, Sportclimbing, Street Luge and Wakeboarding.

Absent from this year's roster of sports will be Snowboarding, with the spectacular 10 story-high Big Air jumping structure. According to Davies, "We felt it was time to move on. There are so many exciting things happening with the sports that are in this summer's X Games, we decided to return snowboarding to its winter showcase with the Winter X Games." There will be no new sports added to this summer's X Games competition, but new disciplines of existing sports will emerge.

In conjunction with this summer's X Games, the inaugural Tube Film Festival presented by Adobe, will make its debut August 20th and 21st at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater. The Tube Film Festival is open to filmmakers around the world and will reflect the culture of today's action sports community, the creative soul of its contributors, and the originality that surrounds them. Visitors to EXPN.com, ESPN's new website dedicated to action sports enthusiasts, lifestyles and events, will be able to view trailers and clips of the entries and vote online for their favorite films beginning June 15th, with the top selections being screened at the Tube Film Festival.

ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC's Wide World of Sports will combine to produce over 28 hours of original programming. ESPN International's 21 networks will distribute to over 150 million households worldwide in more than 180 countries in 21 languages, while EXPN.com will provide daily in-depth online coverage.
