Romain Grosjean gave the Haas F1 team a dream start to its debut season with a brilliant sixth-place finish in Australia.

The French driver turned in one of the best drives of the day, helped by the switch to medium tyres before the race was red-flagged on lap 18. That meant Grosjean did not need to pit again when the race restarted when many of those around him did and the faultless drive which followed earned the team eight points.

After the race an emotional Grosjean shouted down the radio: "This is a win for us guys! Unbelievable!"

Grosjean reiterated that point when speaking to the media and dedicated the result to the team.

"An amazing race, an amazing weekend.," Grosjean said. "It feels like standing on the top step of the podium for us, it's been an amazing race, amazing weekend. Australia has never been very nice to me so finally I change [team] and it works."

"For all the guys, for the work they've been doing over the past few days has been ... So much work behind the scenes."

Grosjean thinks the achievement is all the more remarkable given Haas' limited track time over the winter.

"Since day one I told the guys the car has huge potential and we needed to get a good result, a good qualifying and then going into the race that was true. We've got plenty of areas where we can improve, we know it, and that result is a morale boost for everyone to find these marks, get confidence and move on from there."
