This land is your land
Major league players and their wives are raising money for victims of the Sept. 11 attack with an auction and sales of T-shirts designed by Phillies pitcher Nelson Figueroa, with production help from Atlanta's Mike Remlinger. The T-shirts feature a baseball overlaying the flag with the words "For all the victims and the heroes, united we stand."

Approximately 100 were sent to each team for distribution in home parks, but the shirts and auction can be found at bigleaguers.com.

In the first week, more than $50,000 in T-shirt sales alone was raised in Atlanta, Arizona, Colorado and Florida.

Cannons don't thunder, nothing to plunder ...
Joke of the week: "Derek Bell is the ultimate pirate. He lives on a boat and steals money." In reality, Derek is a great guy who plays hard when healthy, but it's a funny line.

I thought I was a child
Nicknames of the week: "Harry Potter" for Barry Zito, "Will Hunting" for Eric Chavez.

Right place, wrong time
Is Todd Zeile really Forrest Gump?

  • Who was at the plate when Robby Alomar spit at John Hirschbeck? Yup, Zeile.

  • He was asked to move from catcher to third so Terry Pendleton could be let go, and go on to Atlanta to be MVP.

  • He was the first player to sign a long-term contract after the '95 court ruling that sent players back onto the field, but when the Cardinals reneged on that deal, they fired Joe Torre within an hour and sent him on his way to New York.

  • His season ended in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000 losing to the eventual world champion Yankees.

  • He was the Orioles' third baseman when Cal Ripken finally decided to move from short to third.

  • He played with Mike Piazza with the Dodgers, Marlins and Mets.

  • He was with the Mets at the time of the World Trade Center bombings.

    The singer, not the song
Separated at birth: Chuck Finley and Michael Bolton.

Who do you think I am?
And in June would you have bought that Steve Trachsel could finish the season with more quality starts than Mike Hampton and tied for the Mets lead in wins?

I thought she was saying good luck, not goodbye
When the Tigers took their official team photo Thursday morning, Roger Cedeno and Juan Encarnacion were missing, without reason. Cedeno hadn't started in 16 games and was three plate appearances short of a $50,000 bonus, while Encarnacion hadn't played in 21 games.
