| | HOLLY HILL, S.C. -- Lou Holtz and Eddie Fogler, the football
and basketball coaches at South Carolina, and Clemson counterparts
Tommy Bowden and Larry Shyatt joined marchers Tuesday protesting
the flying of the Confederate flag over the state capitol.
Holtz walked alongside Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr.,
while Gamecocks basketball coach Eddie Fogler carried the state
flag.
Bowden and Shyatt marched nearby.
"It gave me goose bumps, walking up the highway with Lou
Holtz," said Riley, the march's chief organizer.
"The university has come out real strong against the flag,"
Bowden said. "We're just here to show that support."
About 30 people took part in the "Get in Step" march, which
began Sunday and is expected to conclude with a Statehouse rally
Thursday.
"This is just something that I wanted to take part in, one
person expressing one opinion that the flag needs to come down,"
Fogler said.
"He's a thoughtful man," Riley said of Holtz. "He told me
it's important to do what's right, and this is what's right for
South Carolina."
Meanwhile, at The Masters on Tuesday, Tiger Woods was asked by ESPN about whether he would play next week in the MCI Classic in Hilton Head, S.C., in light of the Confederate-flag issue.
Woods responded, "My sole concentration is on this tournament. I haven't decided if I am going to play at Hilton Head next week."
Woods has until Friday to decide about playing in next week's tournament. He did play at Hilton Head last year.
Two weeks ago, when Woods was asked by ESPN about playing in South Carolina, he said: "I really don't have any comment. I'm a golfer. I'd rather just stay out of it."
