Marlins sign OF Tim Raines to minor league deal

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Outfielder Tim Raines, who came out of retirement and played with his son last year, signed a minor league contract with the Florida Marlins on Monday.

Raines, 42, hit .308 with four RBI in 47 games with the Montreal Expos last season before signing with the Baltimore Orioles. He played four games with Baltimore, including two games where he started in left field alongside his son Tim Raines Jr.

A seven-time All-Star, Raines has a .295 batting average with 169 home runs, 973 RBI and 1,562 runs in 2,404 career games. He ranks fifth on the all-time stolen bases list with 808.

Raines retired before the 2000 season after he had signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees, the team he helped win the World Series in 1996 and 1998. He spent 1999 with the Oakland Athletics and missed the final two months of that season while recovering from lupus.

Originally selected by the Montreal Expos in the fifth round of the 1977 draft, Raines played there from 1979-90. Last season, he rejoined Montreal and played under current Marlins manager Jeff Torborg.
