To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Title IX and its dramatic influence on the history of American sports, ESPN, Inc. will offer Women and Sports Weekend, June 21-23. Through a series of programming initiatives that recognize the significance, growth and overall impact of women in sports, ESPN will highlight the changes to the sports landscape resulting from Title IX, which was signed into law on June 23, 1972. The weekend will encompass more than 30 hours of women's sports-related events, specials, documentaries and series on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Classic, as well as women's sports guests and/or topics on events, interview shows and magazine-style programs. Women and Sports Weekend will culminate on the anniversary day -- Sunday, June 23 -- with four different live women's sports events, select taped events, plus special editions of the weekly Sports Reporters and Outside the Lines. Additionally, ESPN Classic will offer replays of the 1999 Women's World Cup Championship and the 1973 Battle of the Sexes: Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs.
Women and Sports Weekend highlights:
"Title IX impacts everyone -- from players to coaches to fathers and mothers -- in so many meaningful ways," said ESPN President George Bodenheimer. "This special anniversary provides the perfect backdrop to celebrate the evolving connection between women and sports. Through this ambitious programming initiative, the ESPN family of services is poised to reflect the growth and importance of women in sports." |
