Tiger Woods has entered The Open at Royal Troon but his agent Mark Steinberg said it was done as part of the process to be eligible to play the tournament in July. Entries closed Thursday. It is much like Woods entering the U.S. Open several weeks ago. He has yet to say when he will return to competitive golf. Woods tied for 9th at Troon in 2004 when Todd Hamilton won in a playoff over Ernie Els.

Danny Willett's birdie putt at 18 drifts by and he'll have to settle for a 6-under 66 to start the BMW PGA Championship. He's 1 behind leaders Scott Hend and Y.E. Yang. But Wentworth loves a surprise winner, so watch this space...

Jason Sobel @JasonSobelESPN

Y.E. Yang tied for Euro Tour lead and Rocco Mediate on 59 Watch on Champions Tour. All of the Ghosts of Christmas Past for Tiger Woods.

Danny Willett: Masters champion and highest-ranked player in the field at the BMW PGA Championship. And boy is it showing. 5-under thru 14 and, with 2 par-5s to finish, whose to say he won't be atop the leaderboard overnight?

Alex Perry ESPN UK Editor

Danny Willett hasn't been in great form since winning The Masters, but he's enjoying his opening day at the BMW PGA Championship. The Englishman reached the turn in -3 before adding another birdie at 10 to move within 3 of leaders Scott Hend and Y.E. Yang.

Alex Perry ESPN UK Editor

Remember Y.E. Yang? (If you don't, ask Tiger Woods.) Not content with stunning the world at the 2009 PGA Championship, Asia's only male major champion is now making his mark on the European Tour's version. Co-leader at -7.

Alex Perry ESPN UK Editor

The BMW PGA Championship loves to throw out a surprise winner. Remember Andrew Oldcorn, Ignacio Garrido, Simon Khan? (Me neither.) Australian Scott Hend sets the clubhouse target of the early starters at -7.

Jason Sobel @JasonSobelESPN

Remember, kids: Ben Hogan is a five-time winner of the Dean & DeLuca Invitational — a company founded 18 years after the last of those wins.

Lot of players at the BMW PGA Championship struggling on the stretch between 12 and 15. Bogey-fest out there on the back 9. Defending champion Byeong Hun An and pre-tournament favourite Shane Lowry both fell from a leading position to well off the pace.

Alex Perry ESPN UK Editor

Bit of a who's who of former champions atop the early BMW PGA Championship leaderboard. Fan favourite Luke Donald firmly in the mix, but Australian Scott Hend is the 1st to open a 2-shot lead at 6-under.

Alex Perry ESPN UK Editor

Lovely reception for Matthew Southgate on the 1st tee at the BMW PGA Championship. The young Englishman was diagnosed with cancer last year and has battled back to earn his European Tour card thanks to an emotional 4th place finish at last week's Irish Open.
