Two hours. That's all it took.

At 9 a.m. PT, just 120 minutes after the first ball was struck at Riviera today, the star-studded Nissan Open already owned a star-studded leaderboard, with Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, Padraig Harrington, Will MacKenzie and J.J. Henry sharing the lead at 3-under. Though more than half the field hadn't even teed off yet, I was already giddy about the prospect of this season's first knock-down, drag-out, big-time, elite-player, final-round battle down the stretch on Sunday. (You've got to be giddy to use that many hyphens in a sentence, right?)

At the risk of sounding like a Golf Channel infomercial at 4 a.m., I bring you this: But wait, there's more! Within a few hours, those fine golfers were joined on the leaderboard by Phil Mickelson, David Toms and defending champ Rory Sabbatini. A short time later, Ernie Els popped up and by day's end, we had one heck of a leaderboard. You could have only looked at the names and thought, "So when did they start playing the Masters in February?"
