And there's the turkey for Jimmy Walker. Three straight birdies and he's starting to make Baltusrol look like a walk in the park. Walker is now 10-under, the first player to reach double-digits all week.

Jordan Spieth says he's happy with his stroke play but is having trouble with his short-distance putting at Baltusrol Golf Club.

Another hole, another birdie for Jimmy Walker. He'd been struggling earlier this year, but he's making it look easy so far this week. He's now posted four birdies without a bogey through 13 holes and leads the PGA by a stroke.

Long birdie by Jimmy Walker on the 12th hole moves him back into a share of the lead with Emiliano Grillo at 8-under, two shots clear of the next closest player.

Mickelson opens day with shot into street

The five-time major winner's first hole at the PGA Championship Friday also featured a shot by a cart path and one near someone's backyard. See the drama

Phil Mickelson started with triple-bogey, made two birdies, then had a short putt on No. 9 to shoot even on the front -- and missed it. That's totally Mickelsonian.

World No. 1 Jason Day just played his front-nine in even-par 34. It was more excited than it sounds, though. Day carded three birdies, but those were offset by a double-bogey and a bogey. He currently stands at 2-under, six shots off the lead.

Coming off a double-bogey at the seventh hole, world No. 1 Jason Day stiffs an approach shot at the short, 369-yard eighth. A birdie there gets him back to 1 under for the week and inside the top 30 at the PGA Championship. Remember, Day didn't play a single practice round at Baltusrol until Wednesday ... as in two days ago.

Phil Mickelson started his day with a wayard drive and a triple-bogey 7. A birdie on No. 8 gets one shot back and he's now 1 over at the PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy's birdie attempt on the par-4 seventh hole comes up just short on the low side. He's right on the cut line at 2 over (T-70) but has played the more difficult front side so far in 2 under at the PGA Championship. A couple more birdies before he gets to the closing back-to-back par-5s could yield a weekend tee time for the Northern Irishman.

How finicky is golf? The man who played a near-flawless final round at The Open (Phil Mickelson) is in danger of missing the cut. At the moment Lefty is +3, 1 shot off the cutline with 12 holes to play Friday at the PGA Championship. Others that are in danger of missing the weekend at Baltusrol are Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar and Luke Donald. Reigning U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson, who finished in the top 10 at Troon, will definitely be getting the weekend off after going 77-72 (+9).

Billy Hurley III skipped The Open at Royal Troon so he could attend his sister's wedding. How big a deal is that? Well, the man who served in the Navy in the Persian Gulf (among other places) has only played in four majors in his career. This week's PGA Championship is his fifth and he's never finished higher than T-48 (at the 2014 U.S. Open.) Through seven holes in Round 2 at Baltusrol, Hurley is T-30, 1 under overall but has jumped 51 places on the leaderboard so far on Friday.

Jordan Spieth last month, talking about current leader Emiliano Grillo: "He's one of the best strikers of the golf ball I've ever seen."

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Jimmy Walker is playing some seriously solid golf. A birdie at the 8th hole gets him one shot back of the lead at -7 with one big difference. The leader (Emliano Grillo) is playing the back nine first, while Jimmy Walker is on the front nine and still has the easier side to play.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

How is Rory's ball striking today? He's 4-4 on fairways hit and 5-5 on greens. His proximity to the hole is 23' compared to 31' on Thursday. Can the putter get hot?!

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

So far for round 2 the front nine is playing almost a full shot over par while the back nine is playing right on par for the field.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Andy Sullivan now has back to back birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes getting him to within 2 of the lead at -5.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Rory McIlroy finally decides to get in on the birdie action droppin' a nice one at the par three 4th hole. That gets Rory to +3 and one shot from the cut.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Jason Day gives back the birdie he made at the second hole with a bogey at the 3rd hole to fall again to -2 where he started the day.
