Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson are 3-over and 2-over, respectively, but perhaps the biggest surprise in their grouping is that the third member, Jason Day is 1-under through eight holes. As of this time yesterday, Day had yet to even set foot on this golf course. He played an afternoon practice round, though, and is now bogey-free so far.

Dang it!! Kevin Na just messed it up for group 10's front nine. Perfectly par no more.

Starting to get the feeling this will be one of those days when players walk off Baltusrol after their rounds, see Jimmy Walker's score and blurt out, "What course was that guy playing?!" Walker played his first nine holes in 4-under and just added a birdie on his 10th to grab a two-stroke lead.

Jason Sobel ESPN Senior Writer

Rory McIlroy sounded confident in his game and pleased with the golf course during his pre-tournament interviews, but that's not showing in his performance so far. Poor putting has largely led to three early bogeys, as the two-time PGA champion is already 3-over through seven holes.

Rory McIlroy is already 3-over through seven holes. He'll need to start battling if he wants another back-door top-10.

Phil Mickelson, who won at Baltusrol back in 2005 and, of course, was runner-up at Royal Troon two weeks ago, is already 2-over for the round after narrowly missing a par putt attempt on the 16th hole, his seventh of the day.

Rickie Fowler just made the turn at the PGA Championship in 3-under and is tied for the lead. Since finishing top-five in all four majors two years ago, he hasn't had a top-10 and has three missed cuts.

Phil Mickelson can't convert the birdie. Lips out on the high side and he'll stay at +1 thru six holes

Phil Mickelson from the deep rough left of the 15th fairway hits his approach shot to 5'. Phil's looking for his first birdie of the day.

Few clouds in the sky so with very little wind movement the heat is starting to feel oppressive.

Jimmy Walker's major rounds so far this year: 71-75-74-75-75-76-72-80. So of course, now he's your PGA leader.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

That's back to back bogeys for Rory McIlroy on 13 and 14, he now goes to +2 and five shots back of Jimmy Walker who is -3 thru 7 holes.
