After a birdie putt slides by the cup on the par-3 fourth hole at the PGA Championship, that's four straight pars to start the day for world No. 3 Jordan Spieth.

The pairing of Anirban Lahiri, Tony Finau and Matthew Fitzpatrick have played a combined 15 holes so far on Thursday and are collectively +7 with no birdies. Yes, conditions are getting warmer and more difficult this afternoon at the PGA Championship.

The only guy who can win back-to-back majors this week -- Henrik Stenson -- nearly holed his approach shot on the second hole at Baltusrol. The Swede, who won the Claret Jug all of 11 days ago, will have a kick-in birdie to get to 1 under par at the PGA Championship.

Does good form carry over from one tournament to another, even at a major? Apparently it does for Jhonny Vegas at the PGA Championship. He finished T-4 at the Barbasol Championship (with a second-round 60), then won last week at the RBC Canadian Open. He shot a 2-under-par 68 and is currently tied for seventh at Baltusrol.

Bubba Watson gets into red figures at the PGA Championship with a birdie putt that hangs on the lip on the par-4 second hole, then decides it would be better off in the bottom of the cup. And playing partner Sergio Garcia does the same. Both are 1 under through two holes at Baltusrol on Thursday.

The headline number here might look like that temperature of 92. But the number that will matter more to this afternoon's golfers during the opening round of the PGA Championship is that 9 mph wind—hardly a zephyr, but enough of a breeze to render the late rounds more of a challenge than the early ones.

Me and Jason Sobel just spoke to Wyatt Worthington II after his first round of the PGA Championship. Asked about the support he's had this week, he showed me his phone... That's says it all

Ty Wenger ESPN Editor

World No. 1 Jason Day pars out his final four holes to finish at –2 on the first round of the PGA Championship; pretty good for a guy who hadn't seen the course prior to yesterday.

Ty Wenger ESPN Editor

Phil Mickelson closes with pars on his final two holes to finish his first round at the PGA Championship at +1. Considering that he was sitting at +4 through 11 and sporting the look of a man fighting a ferret, that's a fancy turnaround.

Ty Wenger ESPN Editor

Hey look, Rich Beem is partying like it's 1999! (OK, technically he's partying like it's 2002, when he won the PGA Championship, his only major, and his last PGA Tour win.) Beem has opened with birdies on his first two holes. Not for nuthin, but calling up Lloyds of London and dropping the kids' college fund on him winning this PGA is non-recommended.

Bob Harig ESPN Senior Writer

Sergio Garcia is about to tee off in his 70th consecutive major championship, a streak that dates to the 1999 Open at Carnoustie. Garcia has never won a major but he does have 22 top-10 finishes, including T5s at the U.S. Open and Open in the last several weeks. He's got a ways to go however to match Jack Nicklaus' consecutive major streak of 146, which started at the 1962 Masters and went through the 1998 U.S.Open.

Ty Wenger ESPN Editor

Is your favorite golfer struggling early during his first round of the PGA Championship? Take heart: the three easiest holes at Baltusrol today (including the only two par-fives, the two closing holes) are found in the final five holes. Much like life itself, redemption can come at the end.

Bob Harig ESPN Senior Writer

Padraig Harrington had an interesting take on Baltusrol after a first-round 71. "It seemed they had two different people set up the front 9 and back 9,'' the 2008 PGA champ said. "The front-9 pins were the easiest I've ever seen in a major. Much tighter pins on the back 9.'' Still, Harrington said of Baltusrol: "You'd love to play golf here every day of the week.''

Ty Wenger ESPN Editor

Looking for a marquee group to follow this afternoon at the PGA Chanpionship? The PGA of America has made it easy for you. If you don't think the 1:25 grouping of Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia and Jordan Spieth is a thing worth watching, you don't like golf. And if you don't like golf, why are you reading this?

Ty Wenger ESPN Editor

The thrill = back! After going +4 over his first 11 holes in the PGA Championship, Phil has birdied three of the last five holes to get to +1. Because that's what he does. Up next: a tee shot off a tent, followed by a hole-out to save par. Seriously, does anyone think that's NOT about to happen?

Kevin Maguire Golf

Argentina's Emiliano Grillo, currently a shot off Jimmy Walker's lead at Baltusrol, noted that the weakest part of his game is his putting, but it's the most important part of the game. All aspects worked well for him Thursday at the PGA Championship after posting his career-low round in a major (66).

Ty Wenger ESPN Editor

Jimmy Walker has finished his opening round of the PGA Championship at -5, and is the leader in the clubhouse. With the Baltusrol greens getting firmer and the winds picking up this afternoon, it's a pretty decent bet he'll stay that way.

Ty Wenger ESPN Editor

Are you are a Phil-I ever? Then take heart, you eternal optimist, you! Phil the Thrill just sank a 15-foot putt on his 15th hole of the day to fight back to +2 on his opening round of the PGA Championship.
