Through six holes, U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson is already 4-over, with a double and two bogeys. Surprising start for a guy who's been the PGA Tour's most consistent player this season.

The fairly high-profile grouping of Jim Furyk, Francesco Molinari and Shane Lowry just played Baltusrol's entire front nine without a single birdie.

So much for that six-hole, no-bogey start for Jordan Spieth. He just posted a double-bogey on the seventh, quickly dropping to 2-over.

Six holes down and six pars for Jordan Spieth so far. Playing with Bubba Watson and Sergio Garcia, Spieth has yet to post a birdie, though on a day when Baltusrol is showing its teeth, simply minimizing the mistakes is beneficial.

Michael Block, head pro at Arroyo Trabuco GC in Mission Viejo, Calif., is 2-under through 11 holes. Love it when a club pro makes a run.

Jason Sobel ESPN Senior Writer

One of the coolest things about the PGA Championship -- the thing that most separates it from the other three majors -- is that because the event is run by the PGA of America, there are 20 PGA professionals included in the field amongst the world's best players. Right now, Michael Block, the head pro at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, Calif., is playing like one of those players. Through 11 holes, he's 2-under, in a share of eighth place.

Kevin Maguire Golf

The only player currently on the course making a serious run at the lead? Australian John Senden, who shot a bogey-free back nine (his front nine) to stand at 3 under, 2 shots off Jimmy Walker's early pace at the 98th PGA Championship.

Kevin Maguire Golf

With a birdie on his final hole on the front nine, Andrew "Beef" Johnston makes the turn at 1 over. The PGA Championship is just his fourth career major, which includes a T-8 in The Open less than two weeks ago at Royal Troon.

Dustin Johnson found a bit of trouble on the 500-yard, par-4 third hole at Baltusrol. After a wayward drive found the left trees, he had to punch out. Add a 3-putt to the mix and that double-bogey drops the reigning U.S. Open champion to 2 over, 7 shots behind PGA Championship clubhouse leader Jimmy Walker.

Kevin Maguire Golf

After a birdie putt slides by the cup on the par-3 fourth hole at the PGA Championship, that's four straight pars to start the day for world No. 3 Jordan Spieth.

The pairing of Anirban Lahiri, Tony Finau and Matthew Fitzpatrick have played a combined 15 holes so far on Thursday and are collectively +7 with no birdies. Yes, conditions are getting warmer and more difficult this afternoon at the PGA Championship.

The only guy who can win back-to-back majors this week -- Henrik Stenson -- nearly holed his approach shot on the second hole at Baltusrol. The Swede, who won the Claret Jug all of 11 days ago, will have a kick-in birdie to get to 1 under par at the PGA Championship.

Kevin Maguire Golf

Does good form carry over from one tournament to another, even at a major? Apparently it does for Jhonny Vegas at the PGA Championship. He finished T-4 at the Barbasol Championship (with a second-round 60), then won last week at the RBC Canadian Open. He shot a 2-under-par 68 and is currently tied for seventh at Baltusrol.

Kevin Maguire Golf

Bubba Watson gets into red figures at the PGA Championship with a birdie putt that hangs on the lip on the par-4 second hole, then decides it would be better off in the bottom of the cup. And playing partner Sergio Garcia does the same. Both are 1 under through two holes at Baltusrol on Thursday.

The headline number here might look like that temperature of 92. But the number that will matter more to this afternoon's golfers during the opening round of the PGA Championship is that 9 mph wind—hardly a zephyr, but enough of a breeze to render the late rounds more of a challenge than the early ones.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Me and Jason Sobel just spoke to Wyatt Worthington II after his first round of the PGA Championship. Asked about the support he's had this week, he showed me his phone... That's says it all

Ty Wenger ESPN Editor

World No. 1 Jason Day pars out his final four holes to finish at –2 on the first round of the PGA Championship; pretty good for a guy who hadn't seen the course prior to yesterday.

Ty Wenger ESPN Editor

Phil Mickelson closes with pars on his final two holes to finish his first round at the PGA Championship at +1. Considering that he was sitting at +4 through 11 and sporting the look of a man fighting a ferret, that's a fancy turnaround.
