Medalist Lisa McCloskey advances
NESHANIC STATION, N.J. -- Qualifying medalist Lisa McCloskey advanced to the second round of match play in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links, beating 16-year-old Hana Ku 1-up on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old McCloskey, a Curtis Cup and University of Southern California player from Houston, edged Ku, from Basking Ridge, N.J., with a par on the 18th hole at Neshanic Valley Golf Course. McCloskey will face Alice Jeong of Gardena, Calif., in the second round. Jeong beat Julie Shutler of Manteca, Calif., 5 and 3.
Past champion Emily Tubert of Burbank, Calif., set up a second-round match with 2010 U.S. Girls' Junior champion Doris Chen of Bradenton, Fla. Tubert, the 2010 winner who plays at Arkansas, beat Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston, S.C., 2 and 1. Chen, coming off her freshman season at Southern California, routed Abbey Carlson of Lake Mary, Fla., 6 and 5.
The tournament is limited to players who don't hold privileges at any course that doesn't extend playing privileges to the general public.
