Both players, who had not qualified for the year's second WGC event otherwise, moved inside the top 50 in the world rankings. Being inside the top 50 as of March 3 gave players not otherwise qualified a spot in the field. Thompson jumped up to No. 45 from 114th the week prior, and Ogilvy vaulted up to No. 47 after being 79th heading into the Honda Classic. Ogilvy won the WGC tournament at Doral in 2008.
The rise in the rankings might prove more important to Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, since he's not yet qualified for the Masters. If he can stay inside the top 50 as of March 31, he'll get an invite to Augusta National for the year's first major.
Four other golfers -- Russell Henley, Brian Gay, Charles Howell III and John Merrick -- all earned tee times at Doral starting Thursday in the no-cut event by virtue of being inside the top 10 in the 2013 FedEx Cup rankings after not yet qualifying for the tournament through other means.
